Gênese
A story of carnations, told through surface design.
Concept
“Gênese” is a Portuguese word that means beginning. This collection represents the determination it takes to gracefully fight and move on to a new chapter of life. At the end of my journey at NIFT, it describes a bold new start.
It is inspired by the red carnation, distributed as a symbol of new beginnings and a peaceful revolution during the overthrow of the dictatorship in Portugal in 1974.

Process
Form derivation & surface exploration
Inspired by the varied ways military officers carried these flowers. Some tucked them into their uniform pockets, others fastened them to their caps, collars or shoulder straps. Each garment reinterprets the carnation in a distinct form, through form derivation and surface design.

Diantha
A-line short dress
Features adda embroidery along the edge of its faux lapel: a combination of beadwork, sequin detailing and appliqué using hand-shaped glass nylon. The bottom half is adorned with treadle cutwork embroidery.

Strapless A-line long dress
Embroidery on one of its overlapping bust panels, combining beadwork and appliqué on the adda. The satin-on-satin appliqué includes stitched satin pipes and manually out-turned satin forming the petals, embellished with a mix of beads and nalki.

Jacket dress
The lapels are the focal point of this jacket dress, showcasing intricate Canadian smocking, a hand-executed fabric manipulation that took six hours to complete. The finished panel was embellished with beadwork on the adda, then stitched in place as the lapels of the jacket.

Strapless bodycon dress and bolero set
A honeycomb flat knit contours the body while staying comfortable, offering both structure and stretch. The knitted bolero pairs the honeycomb with a ruffled pointelle on the sleeves, developed on a 12 GG flat knit machine over many try-outs, changing gauges, yarns and yarn counts.

Azara
Corset and short skirt
The corset's base layer is adorned with carnations, each individually hand-stitched in place. The carnations are made entirely of dori and thread, with no base fabric. They were embroidered onto water-soluble fusing, then embellished with adda beadwork, sequins and selective foiling. The skirt's hem is ruffled by a fishline inserted within the baby hem.

This corset integrates multiple surface techniques within a single garment, set in close proximity for visual cohesion. The corseted panels combine cutwork appliqué and ruching; the bust panel is built entirely from pintucks, finished with delicate hand embellishment.
